Our division handles the maintenance of roads and road care concerns. It is our concern to make Boone County roads and right-of-way as safe, sustainable, and functional as possible. We strive to provide simply the best service to the public.   Our Responsibilities: We oversee culvert installation. New culvert installations are requested by Engineering Division of Public Works. Culvert replacements or repairs are done as a request after inspection or complaint. We are responsible for bridge maintenance. Bridges that have a twenty foot span or more are inspected every two years by the State Highway Department. Based on these State reports, work is scheduled by the county to do repairs. The City of Florence takes care of the bridge repairs needed in their city just as the State takes care of their bridges and privately-owned bridges are maintained by their owners. We repair potholes. If you see a pothole on a county road in Boone County, please feel free to call us. If you know that a state road in Boone County is in need of repair, then give them a call (859)-341-2700. It's a bit confusing but contacting the proper entity will help expedite the repairs. We coordinate street maintenance control. Streets are swept only when debris is on them. We do not vacuum leaves or grass. We repair storm sewers. Repairs are done as needed or by complaint. Most storm sewer systems are designed by an engineer and should not be tampered with. We repair several storm sewers within Boone County but this is only until Sanitation District # 1 adds them to their District. At this time, Sanitation District #1 is not responsible for all of Boone County's sanitation. We take care of ditching. Ditches are installed mostly on the rural roads. If water lies too long in the ditch the sub-grade of the road gets too soft and the pavement begins to break up. The keys to roadway longevity are drainage, drainage and drainage. We oversee mowing and trimming trees. We contract out mowing three times a year. If a road needs to be mowed we have a tractor and weed eaters to do so. Guardrails are mowed while the mowing cycle is ongoing. Trees are trimmed back on the right of way. The removal of shrubs that hamper utilities is contracted out. We oversee the striping of County roads. Turning arrows, stop bars, and other painting is done by a contractor because of the special equipment needed to apply paint. Roads that meet a certain criteria get striped. We are responsible for paving County roads. The actual paving work is done by a contractor. The county engineer has data on each road which is used to formulate a computer-generated list of roads to be paved each year. These roads are checked to make sure they need to be paved and that there aren't any conflicting projects scheduled. There are different types of maintenance done other than paving the surface of the road. We are in charge of snow and ice control. Each year as new streets are built, the snow routes are revised and more resources are needed to treat the roads in a timely manner. There are situations that slow down our response time such as are parked cars in the cul-de-sacs (though we have a county ordinance that deals with this problem), construction areas, and accidents. Streets are ranked on a priority list from one, or most urgent to three, least urgent. There are four hundred and twenty-five miles of road to be treated with thirty trucks. We must travel 1500 to 2000 miles to cover these roads and average about four to six hours to treat each inch of snow. Plowing takes a considerably longer time because of the precision and caution that must be taken to safely move the snow. The more traffic on these roads, the higher chances are for accidents. Salt is the primary material that we use to treat the roads though in very rare situations we use a sand-salt mix. We treat all of the county roads while the City of Florence and City of Walton and State treat their designated roads. We have a ?snow emergency policy? for the county.
